The Problem
A BC municipality suspected significant water loss on an aging cast-iron main serving 800 connections. Night-flow analysis suggested 1.5M L/day minimum night flow.
Detection Method
Step-testing plus acoustic correlation survey of 2.4km of distribution main. GPR confirmed pipe depth and soil conditions for accurate correlation. Two leaks identified: joint leak at 1.8km and saddle leak at 2.2km.
Results
Both leaks repaired within 2 weeks. Post-repair flow showed 1.2M L/month recovery. Annual savings: $45K. Report supported infrastructure renewal funding.
